Context

Although Indigenous youth suicide is a significant health inequity, there is limited research on how to address it in effective and respectful ways. Promoting Community Conversations About Research to End Suicide (PC CARES) is a promising way to do just that! Facilitated by local leaders, PC CARES shares practical research evidence with community members so that they can use it, strategically and in self-directed ways, to prevent suicide. PC CARES is a practical way to translate research to self-determined actions, and to build a community of practice within communities. The first pilot study documented gains in self-perceived knowledge, skills and attitudes toward suicide prevention (NIMH MH096884). Follow-up surveys showed increased prevention behaviour after attending two+ learning circles, and social network measures suggest that people “close to” PC CARES participants also increased their preventative actions when compared to others. Come learn how it works!
