Événements IHSP Annual Conference - Legalizing Marijuana in Canada: Policy Challenges

On April 26 and 27 2018, the Institute for Health and Social Policy will be hosting a major international conference on the policy implications of the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes in Canada. IHSP has assembled a very distinguished list of speakers, drawn from both academia, industry and the policy worlds, who will help us to think through the challenges and opportunities that legalization will give rise to. These include public safety and public health concerns, workplace challenges, and complex questions as to how best to put in place a legal marijuana market in a context where an illegal market already exists.

Plenary speakers will include Joao Goulao, one of the architects of Portugal's unique drug policy regime; Leonardo Costa Franco, the former Chair of Uruguay's National Drug Council, and Ethan Nadelmann, former Executive Director of the Drug Policy Alliance in the US. Sue Montgomery, the Mayor of Montreal's largest borough will examine the legal change from the point of view of municipal policy. Chief Gina Deer andChief Rhonda Kirby, from the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake will examine the policy from the point of view of First Nations.

Panels will include considerations of taxation, harm reduction, impact on medical marijuana, and much more.
